Second Language Acquisition: Bridging Theory, Practice, and Diversity is a book that investigates the acquisition of a second language (L2) through various theoretical and empirical lenses. It tracks learners’ progress from novice to advanced stages while accounting for variables such as age, motivation, and learning and teaching contexts.
This book conducts a historiography of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and describes different approaches to SLA from the 17th century to the present. Several different Behaviorism, Universal Grammar, Comprehensible Input Hypothesis, and cognitive and sociocultural perspectives are some of the main theories analyzed in the work. It also emphasizes the importance of social interaction and motivation in enhancing the rate of learning an additional language.
Additionally, the book covers the history of the teaching of languages: from old Grammar-Translation Method of languages to the new Direct Method and Communicative Language Teaching. It analyzes advantages and disadvantages of particular language learning methodology approaches in order to give lessons to different learner types.
In addition to assessing cognitive and linguistics elements, the book also delves into the social and emotional levels relevant to learning a second language. Supports such as anxiety, confidence, and the context of the learning environment are very important for learner’s success.
Combining theory with practical aspects of importance, this book entitled Second Language Acquisition: Bridging Theory, Practice, and Diversity attempts to show how second languages are acquired, as well as how active teaching methods can be improved in order to increase effectiveness of learning.
